Keyword Targeting
How many times should you place your keyword(s) within your content?
Way back in the day, some webmasters would use what we now call "black hat" techniques to list their keywords within their pages - like 1000 times! They'd list them (yes - 1000 times!), then colorize them the same color as the background page, thereby "hiding" them from the users as well as SEs. Now, however, this technique will ban a site from being listed.
SE's use advanced algorithems to "read" content and markup - including external CSS files!!! for just such happenings. So, what to do? How many times should Keywords be used? They should be used in a natural, readable way, without looking too repetative. In a page of 600 words, you should use your keywords about 11 times.
Keyword Weight
All of the tips so far make up the foundation for this last tip. Keyword Weight is the sum of the formula, determined by the techniques listed before, and here they are again:
- First 25 words
- Hx (heading tags)
- Anchor Text
- Bold and Underlined
- Last Paragraph
- Keyword Weight
- Keyword Density
Ideally, you want a keyword weight of 3% to 10%. Anything about 10% is in danger of looking like a keyword spamming technique. Even at 1.5% to 2%, your keyword density may be ok - as long as your backlink program is in full swing

Should i have different keywords for everyone of my pages?
You should target each page differently. If one page differs from another content-wise, then change the keywords to reflect it's specific content.
With that being said, you can cross-flavor your site with the a few of the same keywords - but just make sure that the ones you choose are very general. This is called a sites "theme".
Is it good to have alot of general keywords, or just a couple to the point keywords?
Good question. The answer is both, to a certain extent. Let's say your site has a main page, and many sub-pages. Your site is about different dog breeds, and their care. On your homepage, you want to target a few general terms, and hone-in on specific keywords on the sub-pages.
For example, here is a list of keywords you'd want to target for a site like that:
- dog breeds
- dog care
- dog training
- dog breeding
- dog feeding
The homepage should target dog care/breeding. Then, you should have sub-pages for each topic/keyword(s), like:
- homepage - dog breeds and care
- sub-page #1 - dog care
- sub-page #2 - dog training
- sub-page #3 - dog breeding
- sub-page #4 - dog feeding
This way, your many keywords will not be too saturated on any page, thereby loosing their weight, their on-page importance.
Could you suggest any good keywords? My site is about web designing...(substitute your prefered site here.)
You can go the very competitive route, and use:
- web design
- website creation
- website templates
- web site design
Or find a niche, and zoom in. I mean for example, if your going to offer PHP sites, then go after -
- PHP based website design
Also, look at your target audience. If it is the typical home user who wants to have a website for their family and co-workers to visit, then target:
- personal homepage designs
If, however, you are going after the small business owner who wants to sell his T.V. repair services online, then use:
- television repair service
- television sales
- television repair, Washington, DC
Notice how I go reginal with the keywords? You have to find the niche, and go for blood!
